Participants in the high-level and multi-stakeholder segments stressed the need to ensure attention to gender equality in the implementation of the Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (Johannesburg Plan of Implementation),7 and to mainstream gender issues in the future work of the Commission, as well as the importance of gender balance in all meetings of the Commission.

The vital importance of water, sanitation and housing had been recognized in the Plan of Implementation of the World Summit on Sustainable Development, with its emphasis on the five priority sectors of water, health, education, agriculture and biodiversity, and had also been operationalized by the Commission on Sustainable Development as a cluster in the follow-up to the implementation of the Plan of Implementation.
