The UNESCO General Conference at its twenty-eighth session (1995) established the Project on Environment and Development in coastal regions and in Small Islands (CSI), which aims, in particular, at securing integrated coastal zone planning and management by advancing knowledge, promoting the application of research results and related capacity-building.

The new UNESCO project on environment and population education and information for human development is expected to provide transdisciplinary information, education and awareness, as is the new UNESCO interdisciplinary project on environment and development in coastal regions and small island States, which introduces integrated coastal zone planning and management in relevant countries.
ومن المتوقع أن يهيئ مشروع اليونسكو الجديد بشأن تسخير التربية والمعلومات في مجالي البيئة والسكان ﻷغراض التنمية البشرية معلومات وثقافة وتوعية متعددة التخصصات. ويصدق اﻷمر نفسه على مشروع اليونسكو الجديد المتعدد التخصصات عن البيئة والتنمية في المناطق الساحلية والدول الجزرية الصغيرة الذي يطرح تكامل التخطيط والادارة للمناطق الساحلية في البلدان ذات الصلة.
