This present second report provides supplementary information on the main activities of the United Nations and the secretariat in the field of science and technology for development, including cooperation in technology assessment and forecasting, as well as the role of the United Nations system in endogenous capacity-building in science and technology.
ويُوفر هذا التقرير الثاني معلومات إضافية عن اﻷنشطة الرئيسية لﻷمم المتحدة واﻷمانة في مجال العلم والتكنولوجيا من أجل التنمية، بما في ذلك التعاون في تقييم التكنولوجيا والتنبؤ بها، وكذلك دور منظومة اﻷمم المتحدة في بناء القدرات الذاتية في مجال العلم والتكنولوجيا.

In addition, the relevant organs, organizations and bodies of the United Nations system were requested to provide specific information to update the above-mentioned report with respect to their activities in the field of science and technology for development, including cooperation in technology assessment and forecasting as well as endogenous capacity- building in science and technology.

In that regard, they refer to the report considered by the Commission on Science and Technology for Development at its second session in 1995, entitled " Activities of the United Nations system in the field of science and technology for development, including cooperation in technology assessment " (E/CN.16/1995/7), which, together with a number of the above-mentioned projects, has been left outside the scope of the present report.

Beyond national forests programmes, there will be a need for sustained international support for capacity-building in technology assessment, information access and the dissemination of sound technologies and equipment for use in forestry.

23. Developing countries need to address the urgent need for capacity-building in technology assessment and access, within their international forestry cooperation and support programmes, first with a priority focus on better utilization of technologies already available in the country.

(e) Define methodologies for providing assistance to member States in technology assessment, developing training programmes and policy guidelines, in cooperation with concerned United Nations organizations and financing institutions.
