Allow me to note that in some ways it is a shame that civil society and the private sector could not take part in this Summit in a more active way and that they have been reduced to holding events in hotels and on the street around the summit, because their role in achieving the Millennium Development Goals are so central to the objectives of the United Nations.
واسمحوا لي أن أذكر أنه من العار، إلى حد ما، أن المجتمع المدني والقطاع الخاص لم يشاركا في هذه القمة بشكل أكثر نشاطا، وأن دورهما اختُزل إلى مجرد إقامة احتفالات في الفنادق، وفي الشارع بجوار القمة. ذلك أن دورهما في تحقيق الأهداف الإنمائية للألفية دور محوري بالنسبة لأهداف الأمم المتحدة.

That is timely, because here in this Summit we are speaking specifically of youth -- a group of people with specific needs -- as well as other groups of people who have been excluded from earlier development models -- women, indigenous people, people in rural sectors.
وهذا شيء يجيء في أوانه لأننا هنا في هذه القمة نتكلم بصورة محددة عن الشباب - مجموعة من الناس ذات احتياجات محددة - ومجموعات أخرى من الناس استبُعدت من أنماط التنمية المبكرة - النساء والسكان الأصليين، والناس الذين يعيشون في الأرياف.

In Lebanon, and in the Arab League, there a consensus of opinion upon a clear initiative designed to stabilize the country and protect its social security and political unity. How we had wanted Lebanon to take part in this Summit! However, Lebanon's absence does not mean that we shall not discuss the problem, which keeps us all awake and will threaten the security of the region and regional relations, if it continues and, indeed, flares up.
وفي لبنان، توافقت آراء الجميع وفي الجامعة العربية على مبادرة واضحة تستهدف استقرار لبنان وحماية أمنه الاجتماعي ووحدته السياسية، وكم كنا نود مشاركة لبنان في هذه القمة التي دعي إليها، إلا أن غياب لبنان لا يعني ألا نناقش هذه المشكلة التي تؤرق الجميع وتهدد أمن المنطقة والعلاقات فيها في حال استمرارها بل واشتعالها.

Achieve closer cooperation in view of the joint responsibility to support Arab economic integration projects, leading to an Arab common market, to work for the success of the Arab Economic, Social and Development Summit, affirmed at the Riyadh Summit and which the Government of the State of Kuwait has agreed to host at the beginning of 2009, and to affirm the active involvement of our States in this Summit in achievement of the desired goals.
