The sterile insect technique can be of great help to livestock management in Africa, through the eradication of the tsetse fly and other harmful insects.

The sterile insect technique is being widely applied in support of the fruit and horticultural sectors, and nuclear techniques are helping Member States deal with the incidence of harmful algal blooms, a major problem for areas with an economic dependence on fisheries.
وتُطبّق تقنية الحشرة العقيمة على نطاق واسع لدعم قطاع الفواكه والقطاع البستاني، وتساعد التقنيات النووية الدول الأعضاء على التصدي لمعدّل تكاثر الطحالب الضارة، وهي مشكلة رئيسية بالنسبة للمناطق التي تعتمد اقتصادياً على مصايد الأسماك.

I would like to thank the IAEA's technical assistance programme, which is seeking to eradicate the tsetse fly through sterile insect technique. We welcome their successful efforts. We have made some progress also in getting rid of the malaria-bearing mosquito, which is a major problem for the economic and social development of developing countries in general and for that of African countries in particular.

This also includes genetic pest control based on the sterile insect technique, which is an environment-friendly biotechnology that interferes with the reproduction of the target pests.

At its forty-eighth session, the General Conference of the IAEA approved three resolutions on topics of the highest importance for the African continent: support for the African Union's Pan-African Tsetse and Trypanosomiasis Eradication Campaign; development of the sterile insect technique for the control and eradication of malaria-transmitting mosquitoes; and the IAEA Programme of Action for Cancer Therapy.

6. The EU works closely with the IAEA Secretariat and the other States Parties in implementing a programme on established and emerging nuclear techniques, such as the " sterile insect technique " in Africa, Latin America and the Mediterranean region, and landmine detection techniques, which we hope will contribute to play a part in our efforts to eradicate this evil in mine-affected post-conflict areas.

In the light of the demonstrated success of the sterile insect technique in tsetse eradication, we are confident that the inauguration of the SIT research project on the eradication of malaria-causing mosquitoes at the Agency's Seibersdorf laboratory will play a leading role in the Roll Back Malaria Programme.
