As a result, approaches to policy aimed at reducing social vulnerability must be multi-pronged and internally consistent: an integration of social and economic policy is a necessity to alleviate the impact of vulnerabilities on affected individuals, households, communities and social groups.

It should be noted that the Commission, in its agreed conclusions for 2002, on integration of social and economic policy, invited the Economic and Social Council, at its high-level segment, to examine the importance of integration of social and economic policy in promoting human resources development and enhancing the process of development.

Takes into account the fact that the Commission for Social Development will consider the priority theme " integration of social and economic policy " at its fortieth session, in 2002, and emphasizes the importance of the active participation in and contribution to the work of the Commission by the relevant funds and programmes and the specialized agencies of the United Nations system;

22. At its fortieth session, held from 11 to 27 February 2002, the Commission for Social Development considered the priority theme " integration of social and economic policy " .

23. The report of the Secretary-General on the integration of social and economic policy (E/CN.5/2002/3) referred to gender issues in relation to poverty, decentralization of government functions and responsibilities, employment, education, and national budgets.

24. The Commission on Social Development adopted agreed conclusions on the priority theme, containing recommendations for action to promote the integration of social and economic policy at the national and international levels.

16. The Commission for Social Development at its fortieth session for its part addressed the integration of social and economic policy as the priority theme for 2002 and thus contributed relevant analyses and recommendations on key dimensions of the sustainable development problematique.

Regarding the integration of social and economic policy, inter alia, on the formulation and implementation of public policy, including macroeconomic policy, the Commission claims that to achieve this, it is important to promote sound institutions, open and transparent public policy and consensus-building among all partners.
