At the 5413th meeting, in accordance with the understanding reached in the Council's prior consultations, the President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council's provisional rules of procedure to Salim A. Salim, African Union Special Envoy for the inter-Sudanese peace talks on Darfur and Chief Mediator.

Pursuant to the decision taken at the 5413th meeting, the President, with the consent of the Council, extended an invitation under rule 39 of the Council's provisional rules of procedure to Salim A. Salim, African Union Special Envoy for the inter-Sudanese peace talks on Darfur and Chief Mediator.

23. During the reporting period, a concerted push was made by the African Union (AU) mediation team and participants in the inter-Sudanese peace talks in Abuja to conclude the peace negotiations.

23. Despite the strenuous efforts of the African Union Chief Mediator of the inter-Sudanese peace talks on the conflict in Darfur, Dr. Salim Ahmed Salim, the seventh round of the inter-Sudanese peace talks, which started in Abuja on 29 November 2005, has made slow progress.

In my capacity as the representative of the current Chairman of the African Union (AU), I have the honour to forward herewith the statement of the spokesman of the African Union mediation for the inter-Sudanese peace talks on the conflict in Darfur on the recent attack on Abu Sarouj village in Western Darfur, issued on 21 December 2005 (see annex).

A Comprehensive Peace Agreement has been signed and implemented on the long-drawn north-south conflict, and the fifth round of inter-Sudanese peace talks on Darfur resumed in Abuja in June 2005 and is currently in progress.

On 25 April, in a statement by the President (S/PRST/2006/17), the Council reiterated its full support for the inter-Sudanese peace talks in Abuja on the conflict in Darfur.
