Noting with regret the death of Judge Roberto Ago on 24 February 1995,

3. The Court also records with deep sorrow the death, on 24 February 1995, of Judge Roberto Ago, a Member of the Court since 1979 and President of the Chamber of the Court formed to deal with the case concerning Delimitation of the Maritime Boundary in the Gulf of Maine Area from 1981 to 1984.

1. By a communication dated 24 February 1995, addressed to States parties to the Statute of the International Court of Justice, the Secretary-General drew attention to the vacancy in the International Court of Justice caused by the death of Judge Roberto Ago (Italy) on 24 February 1995.

During the week ending 24 June 1995, the Security Council, at its 3546th meeting, held on 21 June 1995, proceeded to the election of a member of the International Court of Justice, pursuant to its resolution 979 (1995) of 9 March 1995, to fill the vacancy that had occurred as a result of the death of Judge Roberto Ago on 24 February 1995.

In a memorandum dated 1 June 1995 (S/1995/448), the Secretary-General had described the steps to be taken in accordance with Article 14 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice in order to fill the vacancy that had occurred in the Court as a result of the death, on 24 February 1995, of Judge Roberto Ago (Italy).

The CHAIRMAN said, with great sorrow, that since the preceding session of the General Assembly two towering figures of international law had passed away: Judge Roberto Ago, who had been a member of the International Law Commission and a Judge of the International Court of Justice, and Professor Suzanne Bastid, who for many years had been President of the United Nations Administrative Tribunal.

During the week ending 11 March 1995, pursuant to a note by the Secretary-General dated 6 March 1995 (S/1995/178) and in accordance with the understanding reached in its prior consultations, the Security Council met at its 3507th meeting, held on 9 March 1995, to consider the date of an election to fill a vacancy in the International Court of Justice as a result of the death of Judge Roberto Ago (Italy).
