Mr. ABRASZEWSKI (Joint Inspection Unit), introducing the report of the Joint Inspection Unit (JIU) on managing works of art in the United Nations (A/48/72), explained that the inspectors had taken up that question following the observations made by the Secretary-General in his report of 27 November 1990 on building management and maintenance.

298. A report on managing works of art in the United Nations and the comments of the Secretary-General thereon (A/48/72 and Add.1) were considered by the General Assembly at its forty-eighth session, as reflected in resolution 48/217 of 23 December 1993.

1. By its resolution 48/217 of 23 December 1993, entitled " managing works of art in the United Nations: report of the Joint Inspection Unit " , the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to continue to improve the management of works of art in such a manner as to avoid additional costs to the regular budget of the United Nations with due regard to the quality of services being provided.

74. In their continuing effort to improve the focus and action-oriented character of the reports of the Unit (see General Assembly resolutions 45/237 of 21 December 1990 and 47/201 of 22 December 1992), the Inspectors presented succinctly the problems of the United Nations in managing works of art in its possession and their recommendations on how to deal with them.
