The urgent need for continued and enhanced participation of scientists from developing countries in marine scientific research in the Area and the essential role of the International Seabed Authority in that respect was underlined.

VIII. Endowment Fund for marine scientific research in the Area

States parties to UNCLOS may carry out marine scientific research in the Area and shall promote international cooperation in that respect.
