35. At its closing meeting on 5 December 2008, the Meeting of States Parties approved the nomination by the Western Group of Ambassador Marius Grinius of Canada to be Chairman of the Meeting of Experts and Meeting of States Parties in 2009.

5. In accordance with the decision of the 2008 Meeting of States Parties, the 2009 Meeting of States Parties was convened at the Palais des Nations in Geneva from 7 to 11 December 2009, under the Chairmanship of Ambassador Marius Grinius of Canada.

10. Mr. Marius Grinius began his remarks by establishing that the topic of space security is more relevant than ever as mankind's use of space has grown exponentially and the global community greatly depends on the sustainable and peaceful use of outer space.
