Mr. Bennwik (Sweden), speaking on behalf of the European Union, with regard to the need to develop New Varieties of Plants and also guarantee the active participation of farmers, in particular those in developing countries, in decisions related to the conservation of plant genetic resources, noted that valuable results had been obtained from participatory breeding, and asked why participatory methods were being adopted so slowly.
