26. A self-constituted Group of Friends of the Great Lakes Region is being established under Canada's facilitation.

For that reason, we support the Secretary-General's initiative -- in conjunction with the Group of Friends of the Great Lakes Region -- to organize in Nairobi an International Conference on Peace, Security, Democracy and Development in the region.

53. Another important development was the setting up of the Group of Friends of the Great Lakes Region at a meeting that took place on 4 December 2003 in Geneva and which was attended by senior representatives of 28 countries and 10 multilateral institutions.

The Conference had been founded on the principles of international partnership, regional ownership and national stewardship and received financial, technical, diplomatic and political support from the 28 countries and 10 international organizations or agencies of the Group of Friends of the Great Lakes Region.

The period was also used for the formation, in December 2003, of the Group of Friends of the Great Lakes Region, consisting of 28 countries, mainly from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), but which also included three African countries (Gabon, Nigeria and South Africa) and 10 international organizations.
