The main outcome of the conference was the decision to initiate a consultative process on an international mechanism of scientific expertise on biodiversity, which later converged with the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment follow-up process into the single intergovernmental and multi-stakeholder process on the Platform.

The main goals of that cooperation were to expand and enhance the legislative basis for their efforts, to harmonize national laws, to coordinate prevention efforts and to increase cooperation in the areas of scientific expertise and training.
