We shall encourage dialogue between the Governments, civil society, regional institutions and the international community, with a view to having a full debate on the implementation of the commitments undertaken as part of the Alliance for the Sustainable Development of Central America.

Recognizes the need to continue to follow closely the situation in Central America in support of national and regional efforts to overcome the underlying causes that have led to armed conflicts, avoid setbacks and consolidate peace and democracy in the region, as well as promote the objectives of the Alliance for the Sustainable Development of Central America;

During the course of 1995, as I reported in document A/50/534, and 1996, the UNDP, at the request of the Governments of the region and with the assistance of United Nations agencies, has been taking steps to launch a new initiative in the framework of the Alliance for the Sustainable Development of Central America.

The operative part takes note with appreciation of the report of the Secretary-General, underscoring the importance of the new development programme and recognizing the need to continue to follow closely the situation in Central America in order to support national and regional efforts to overcome the underlying causes that led to conflicts and to promote the objectives of the Alliance for the Sustainable Development of Central America.
