The right of the child to freedom of religion or belief is enshrined in article 14, paragraph 1, of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

16. The family, in particular, is regarded as one of the most important pillars in realizing the rights of the child to freedom of expression.

While the Convention on the Rights of the Child stipulated the right of the child to be heard in the context of divorce proceedings, the Committee had yet to examine how article 24 of the Covenant pertained to the right of the child to freedom of opinion or expression.

47. The Committee calls upon the State party to intensify its efforts to ensure the right of the child to freedom of expression, including the freedom to receive information.

148. The Committee is concerned that the right of the child to freedom of association and peaceful assembly is not fully guaranteed in practice.

CRC also had concerns regarding the implementation of the rights of the child to freedom of expression, including the freedom to receive information, and to freedom of association and peaceful assembly.

The Committee welcomes indications that the declaration may have been intended primarily to address only the issue of the right of the child to freedom of religion and that efforts will be made to review the situation.

Article 14 of the Convention guarantees the right of the child to freedom of religion and article 30 provides for the right of a child belonging to a religious minority to profess and practice his or her religion in community with other members of his or her group.
