The fifty-fifth session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee was held in London from 9 to 13 October 2006.

I would like to say a few words about the decisions of the fifty-second session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and about recognizing particularly sensitive Western European sea areas.

The Secretariat will also report to the Conference on the outcome of the fifty-fifth session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee of the IMO, which has been tasked by the IMO Assembly to develop a legally-binding instrument on ship recycling.

As indicated above, work on the draft convention and related guidelines will continue at the fifty-sixth session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee.

The Working Group on Ship Recycling established at the fifty-second session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee agreed that a mandatory scheme should be developed in accordance with the following basic principles:

The SBSTA took note of the information provided by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) secretariat on the outcome of the 47th meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee, held in London from 4 to 8 March 2002;

The development of the reporting system will be further considered by the Working Group on Ship Recycling, which will meet from 13 to 15 July 2005, and at the fifty-third session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee, which will be held from 18 to 22 July 2005.
8 - سيتم إدخال المزيد من التطوير على نظام الإخطار وذلك بواسطة الفريق العامل المختص بإعادة تدوير السفن الذي سيجتمع خلال الفترة من 13 - 15 تموز/يولية 2005، وكذلك أثناء الدورة الثالثة والخمسين للجنة حماية البيئة البحرية التي ستعقد في الفترة من 18 إلى 12 تموز /يوليه 2005.

Nigeria recalls that, during the last meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee of the International Maritime Organization, held last October in London, the principle of the right of passage was again reaffirmed by the majority of participants, including Nigeria.

The Secretariat also attended the sixty-sixth session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee in March 2014 and presented an overview of decision BC-11/16 (MEPC 66/3/1).

The Secretariat attended the fifty-eighth (6 - 10 October 2008), fifty-ninth (13 - 17 July 2009), sixtieth (22 - 26 March 2010), sixty-first (27 September - 1 October 2010) and sixty-second (11 - 15 July 2011) sessions of the Marine Environment Protection Committee.
