In that regard, the next WTO ministerial meeting would provide an opportunity to examine the status of implementation of the agreements reached during the Uruguay Round, the direction of the multilateral trading system and its contribution to the goal of establishing an open, equitable, secure and rule-based trading system.

The subject of the relationship between the provisions of the multilateral trading system and trade measures for environmental purposes, including those pursuant to multilateral environmental agreements, has been under consideration for a number of years, notably within the context of GATT and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
