By its resolution 1995/50 of 28 July 1995, the Council decided that in 1996 the high-level meeting of the operational activities segment should focus on strengthening collaboration between the United Nations development system and the Bretton Woods institutions in the areas of social and economic development, at all levels, including the field level.

In its decision 1996/310 of 13 November 1996, the Council further decided that the high-level meeting of the operational activities segment of its substantive session of 1997 should be devoted to the following theme: " Funding for operational activities for development: implementation of General Assembly resolution 50/227 " .

59. The high-level part of the operational activities segment took place on 28 June and focused on strengthening collaboration between the United Nations development system and the Bretton Woods institutions, against the background of General Assembly resolution 50/227 of 24 May 1996, which is described below in greater detail.

At the Council's substantive session of 1997, the high-level meeting of the operational activities segment will be devoted to the consideration of the funding for operational activities for development (see Council decision 1996/310).

In accordance with paragraph 7 of Economic and Social Council resolution 1998/42 and bearing in mind the outcome of the high-level part of the operational activities segment of the Council, the present section deals with mainstreaming a gender perspective in the operational activities of the United Nations system.

7. Also decides that the themes for the working-level meetings of the operational activities segment should include:

27. The discussions of the operational activities segment should ensure the oversight of activities of the United Nations funds and programmes, providing them with policy guidance and identifying areas susceptible to joint action.
