The Unit for the Integration of Women in Development will be monitoring progress achieved in the implementation of the Regional Programme of Action for the Women of Latin America and the Caribbean, 1995-2000, particularly those strategic actions aimed at substantially improving the conditions of the poor and at improving the quality of life of women, especially those in the poorest groups.

Women’s participation is also being promoted through the implementation of the Regional Programme of Action for the Women of Latin America and the Caribbean, 1995–2001, adopted at the sixth session of the Regional Conference, held in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in September 1994.

The presiding officers agreed that the seventh session of the Regional Conference will take place at ECLAC headquarters at Santiago from 19 to 21 November 1997, with the main objective of speeding up progress in the implementation of the Regional Programme of Action.

During the second meeting, pursuant to section E, paragraph (b), of the Regional Programme of Action, and bearing in mind the climate of reform and financial constraint in which the United Nations is now operating, the following measures were adopted to provide for follow-up on activities aimed at implementation of the Regional Programme of Action and the Platform for Action:

The Plan is the public policy tool for implementing the agreements of the Regional Programme of Action for Women adopted at the sixth session of the Regional Conference on the Integration of Women into the Economic and Social Development of Latin America and the Caribbean (Argentina, 1994), as well as the Platform for Action adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women (Beijing, September 1995).

These meetings evaluated the activities of the United Nations to promote the integration of women into development and review inter-agency coordination measures and mechanisms; reviewed regional preparations for the World Conference and made suggestions for the draft of the Regional Programme of Action.
