56. This report briefly presents some of the preliminary conclusions of the Global Assessment of water statistics and Accounts and the Global Assessment of Energy Accounts, conducted as part of phase 2.

Chapter I. Scope of water statistics

The guidelines serve as a tool for the collection and compilation of water statistics, their integration into the accounting framework and the derivation of indicators as part of the development of a monitoring system for water policies, providing national examples from both developed and developing countries.

50. Further, the Division is developing training modules to support the development and strengthening of water statistics programmes and the implementation of SEEAW, based on existing training material developed and used in international workshops and training by the Division.

The International Work Session on Water Statistics, organized by the Intersecretariat Working Group on Environment Statistics in Vienna in June 2005, recommended that the Working Group set up a Subgroup on Water Statistics to coordinate the work of international organizations in the area of water statistics, and in particular:

The international recommendations for water statistics present a list of recommended and supplementary data items covering a broad range of water statistics needed: to populate the standard tables of SEEAW; to fill in international questionnaires; to compile international water indicators; and to respond to other user needs.

6. The Work Session was organized in nine sessions based on 35 working papers. Each focused on one of the following nine different aspects of water statistics:
