My delegation believes that official holidays at each Secretariat duty station should be more appropriately designated within the purview of the Secretary-General as chief administrative officer of the Organization rather than instructed by a decision of the General Assembly.

The Secretariat explained that the authority to designate official holidays at each duty station rested with the Secretary-General and that the procedure was guided by three considerations: their number should not exceed nine days per year; they should coincide with public holidays at each duty station that were also school holidays; and they should be staggered to fall roughly every two months.
