The Government adopted a comprehensive medical insurance plan that would provide every citizen, on an equal basis, with protection against health hazards; considerable tax incentives had also been implemented to encourage job-generating investments not only in the nickel industry sector but also in the areas of tourism, aquaculture and the food industry; an agreement on cultural development had also been signed with the Government of France.
وذكرت أن الحكومة قامت باعتماد خطة للتأمين الطبي الشامل تكفل لكل مواطن، على قدم المساواة، الوقاية من المخاطر الصحية؛ وأنه جرى تطبيق حوافز ضريبية كبيرة للغاية من أجل التشجيع على الاستثمارات التي تتيح فرص العمل ليس في قطاع صناعة النيكل فحسب، وإنما أيضا في مجالات السياحة والزراعة المائية وصناعة الأغذية؛ وأنه جرى أيضا التوقيع على اتفاق بشأن التنمية الثقافية مع حكومة فرنسا.

47. Ms. Girtel (Canada) said that her delegation welcomed the report of the Director-General of UNESCO on cultural development (A/55/339), as it wished to use every opportunity to highlight the crucial role of culture in the development of creative, prosperous and cohesive societies.
47 - السيدة غيرتيل (كندا): قالت إن وفدها يرحِّب بتقرير المدير العام لمنظمة الأمم المتحدة للتربية والعلم والثقافة (اليونسكو) بشأن التنمية الثقافية (A/55/339) لأنها ترغب في أن تنتهز كل فرصة متاحة لإبراز الدور الحاسم للثقافة في تنمية مجتمعات خلاَّقة ومزدهرة ومتماسكة.

11. Ms. Sibal (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)), in introducing the report of the Secretary-General on cultural development (A/53/321), said that the Intergovernmental Conference on Cultural Policies for Development held in Stockholm from 30 March to 2 April 1998 had been convened in order to find practical responses to the challenges posed by culture and development.
