In an important recent development, the Government of Indonesia was reported to have announced that 31 March would be considered as the deadline by which time refugees would need to have made a decision on whether to return to East Timor or to be registered as Indonesian citizens and possibly resettled in other parts of Indonesia.
36- ومن التطورات الهامة الأخيرة المبلغ عنها إعلان حكومة إندونيسيا أن يوم 31 آذار/مارس سيكون آخر موعد أمام اللاجئين لاتخاذ قرار يختارون فيه العودة إلى تيمور الشرقية أو تسجيلهم بوصفهم مواطنين إندونيسيين وربما إعادة توطينهم في أنحاء أخرى من إندونيسيا.

(c) The importance of cooperation between the Government of Indonesia and relevant international humanitarian agencies in facilitating the registration of the refugees as a way to determine whether their intention is to return to East Timor or to remain in Indonesia based on the principle of freedom of choice.

In this regard, the results of the registration process reflect that from a total of 113,791 participants, 1,250 (1.10 per cent) East Timorese refugees elected to return to East Timor while 111,540 (98.02 per cent) opted to remain in Indonesia and 1,010 (0.88 per cent) abstained.
