I also have the honour to express proudly our satisfaction with the efforts of the previous President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Mr. Ahmed Sorour, the Speaker of Egypt’s national assembly, who emphasized the importance of international parliamentary cooperation, as parliamentarians express the hopes and pains of their peoples.

We are pleased to note that here at United Nations Headquarters, His Excellency Mr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali, the Secretary-General, joined with Mr. Ahmed Fathy Sorour, President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, and Mr. Pierre Cornillon, Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, in signing a cooperation agreement.

I have the pleasure to enclose herewith the text of the five main resolutions adopted at the ninety-eighth session of the General Conference of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, held at Cairo from 11 to 16 September 1997, under the chairmanship of His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Fathi Sorour, Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament and Chairman of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
يسرني أن أرفق طيه نص القرارات الرئيسية الخمسة المعتمدة في الدورة الثامنة والتسعين للمؤتمر العام للاتحاد البرلماني الدولي، المعقودة في القاهرة في الفترة من ١١ إلى ١٦ أيلول/سبتمبر ١٩٩٧، برئاسة الدكتور أحمد فتحي سرور رئيس البرلمان المصري ورئيس الاتحاد البرلماني الدولي.

To quote Doctor Ahmed Fathi Sorour, President of Egypt's People's Assembly, it is now time to " debate in good faith and act in harmony for the benefit of mankind " .

Mr. SALEM (Libyan Arab Jamahiriya) and Mr. NUR (Sudan), supported by Mr. Sorour (Egypt) proposed that, in the second line of paragraph (c), the words “the economic and technical problems and constraints faced by certain developing countries,” be inserted after “developing countries,”.
