(a) Strengthening the role of the Economic and Social Council through its annual ministerial-level substantive reviews to monitor progress in implementing the internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals, and through national voluntary presentations on country experiences in meeting those goals;

First, it entrusted the Council with holding annual ministerial substantive reviews of progress in the implementation in the internationally agreed development goals.

1. Pursuant to the 2005 World Summit Outcome, the General Assembly, in its resolution 61/16, decided that the Economic and Social Council should hold annual ministerial-level substantive reviews as part of its high-level segments.

7. At the intergovernmental level, the General Assembly has been reviewing progress in the implementation of the Millennium Declaration, while the functional commissions and the Council have been conducting substantive reviews of the follow-up to individual conferences, as have the regional commissions in relation to the regional dimensions of those conferences.

At its sixty-first session, the General Assembly decided that the Economic and Social Council should hold annual ministerial-level substantive reviews and the biennial Development Cooperation Forum (resolution 61/16).

(d) Shall replace the national voluntary presentations held in the context of the annual ministeriallevel substantive reviews of the Council, building upon the relevant provisions of General Assembly resolution 61/16 of 20 November 2006, as well as experiences and lessons learned in this context;

9. The Council adopted its first multi-year work programme for the annual ministerial-level substantive reviews in October 2007.
