Under article 5 of the Convention, States parties are under an obligation to eliminate customary practices based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes.

The efforts to do away with every remnant of sex inequality have been ceaselessly intensified for half a century since then, whereby the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or the stereotyped roles for men and women have nearly been eliminated and the discrimination based on the outmoded customs is no longer a big issue of social concern.

States are further required to take steps to eliminate prejudices and change practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women.
ويتعين على الدول كذلك أن تقوم بخطوات للقضاء على التحيزات والعادات العرفية وكل الممارسات الأخرى القائمة على الاعتقاد بكون أي من الجنسين أدنى أو أعلى من الآخر، أو على أدوار نمطية للرجل والمرأة().

This includes the obligation to modify " the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women " (article 5).

Article 5 (a) elaborates on this duty by explaining that States parties agree to modify the social and cultural patterns of conduct of men and women, with a view to achieving the elimination of prejudices and customary and all other practices which are based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes or on stereotyped roles for men and women.
وتتوسع المادة ٥ )أ( في شرح هذا الواجب بأن توضح أن الدول اﻷطراف تتفق على تعديل اﻷنماط الاجتماعية والثقافية لسلوك الرجل والمرأة بهدف القضاء الفعلي على أوجه التعصب واﻷعراف وسائر الممارسات اﻷخرى القائمة على نقص أو تفوق أي من الجنسين أو على تنميط دوري الرجل والمرأة.

(e) To eliminate all forms of gender-based discrimination and to take measures to address stereotyped gender roles and other prejudices based on the idea of the inferiority or the superiority of either of the sexes, and to mainstream in this context a gender perspective in all development and human rights policies and programmes related to children and those specific to the girl child;
(هـ) القضاء على جميع أشكال التمييز الجنساني واتخاذ التدابير للتصدي لتنميط الأدوار الجنسانية وغير ذلك من أشكال التحيز القائمة على فكرة دونية أو فوقية لأحد الجنسين، وتعميم المنظور الجنساني في هذا السياق في جميع سياسات وبرامج التنمية وحقوق الإنسان ذات الصلة بالأطفال، والبرامج والسياسات الخاصة بالطفلة؛

The Forum refers to the need to counteract prejudices, customs and practices that are based on the idea of the inferiority or superiority of either of the sexes.
