3. Mr. Taranda (Belarus) said that the question of refugees remained urgent. Poverty, economic imbalances between countries and regions, armed conflicts, political instability and ecological disasters were at the root of migration movements everywhere in the world.

70. Mr. Taranda (Belarus) welcomed the fact that gender-equality issues and the promotion of women were increasingly taken into account and more new programmes and strategies were adopted in that regard.

30. Mr. Taranda (Belarus) said that his delegation had consistently considered such draft resolutions as the one on human rights in Myanmar as counterproductive and not conducive to the protection of human rights.

50. Mr. Taranda (Belarus), said that Belarus was against resolutions on human rights in specific countries or groups of countries because such texts politicized United Nations human-rights mechanisms and distracted the Committee.

Mr. Taranda (Belarus) said that the declaration on the tenth anniversary of the World Summit for Social Development, adopted at the forty-third session of the Commission for Social Development, had recognized the need to support national efforts of developing countries, the least developed countries and countries with economies in transition.
60 - السيد تاراندا (بيلاروس): قال إن إعلان الذكرى العاشرة لانعقاد مؤتمر القمة العالمي للتنمية الاجتماعية الذي اعتمدته الدورة الثالثة والأربعين للجنة التنمية الاجتماعية قد سلم بضرورة دعم الجهود الوطنية للبلدان النامية وأقل البلدان نموا والبلدان التي تمر اقتصاداتها بمرحلة انتقالية.

Mr. Taranda (Belarus), explaining his delegation's position, said that it had voted against the draft resolution and opposed the adoption of country-specific resolutions, which did not contribute to the spirit of constructive cooperation with Governments and did not take into account countries' needs.

72. Mr. Taranda (Belarus), speaking in exercise of the right of reply, said that his delegation categorically disagreed with the statements of the representatives of the United States and of the Netherlands on behalf of the European Union as having no basis in fact.
