32. Cuba stated that Solomon Islands faced enormous challenges, originating from the global economic crisis and serious environmental problems, as well as other consequences of the unjust international economic order.

Whereas the Committee is fully aware that Solomon Islands is severely affected by financial constraints caused by the current economic crisis, it nevertheless recalls that the recent downsizing of the public sector, which accounts for almost one third of wage employment, has had significant social repercussions.

While it is noted with appreciation that Solomon Islands has recently submitted initial reports to the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and to the Committee on the Rights of the Child, it is regretted that a report has not been submitted to the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination since the State party's initial report in 1983.

Such rethinking is important in light of the fact that Solomon Islands is now a signatory to the the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (signatory: 23 Sept 2008) and its Optional Protocol (signatory: 24 Sept 2009).
