This is the case despite optimism that progress on this issue would follow the signing in August 1996 of the Agreement on Normalization of Relations between the Republic of Croatia and the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

By Article 4 of the Agreement on Normalization of Relations between the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the Republic of Croatia of 26 August 1996, the contracting parties undertook to respect, pending a mutual agreement on Prevlaka, the existing regime of security established through United Nations monitoring.

The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls upon the Republic of Croatia to give up its past practice and resume respect for the process of normalization of relations with the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia on the basis of the Agreement on Normalization of Relations, which is in the mutual interest of both parties, as well as in the interest of peace, stability and development in the region.

23. the Agreement on Normalization of Relations between the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the Republic of Croatia represents a new challenge and a new possibility to have the territorial dispute over Prevlaka resolved by negotiations between the two parties.
٢٣ - ويمثل اتفاق تطبيع العلاقات بين جمهورية يوغوسلافيا الاتحادية وجمهورية كرواتيــا تحديا جديدا وإمكانية جديدة لتسوية النزاع اﻹقليمـــي حول بريفلاكا عن طريـــق المفاوضـــات بين الطرفين.

2. As far as Prevlaka is concerned, the Yugoslav side is fully observant of article 4 of the Agreement on Normalization of Relations between the two countries, which provides that a solution to the disputed question should be found through negotiations.
