42. During the reporting period, the Government had authorized the United Nations to undertake a needs assessment mission to the Nuba Mountains, which had been carried out from 21 to 24 June 1999. The Government had also established the Committee for the Eradication of Abduction of Women and Children (CEAWC).

During his last visit, the Special Rapporteur was informed that, in an attempt to strengthen the Committee for the Eradication of Abduction of Women and Children, the President of the Republic had moved the Committee directly under his supervision, while providing it with full-time chairmanship and appropriate resources.7

The Government of the Sudan was urged to create the conditions necessary for the Committee for the Eradication of Abduction of Women and Children, established in May 1999, to carry out its work fully, and called upon the international community to expand its support for activities, in particular those of the Committee, aimed at improving respect for human rights and humanitarian law during the conflict;
وحثت حكومة السودان على تهيئة الظروف اللازمة لقيام لجنة القضاء على اختطاف النساء والأطفال، المنشأة في أيار/مايو 1999، بعملها بصورة كاملة، وأهابت بالمجتمع الدولي أن يوسع نطاق دعمه للأنشطة، ولا سيما أنشطة اللجنة، التي تهدف إلى تحسين احترام حقوق الإنسان والقانون الإنساني أثناء النزاع؛

(i) To create the conditions necessary for the Committee for the Eradication of Abduction of Women and Children to carry out its work fully, including the identification of cases and victims, family reunification and the development of concrete measures to eradicate this practice;
