Two protocols entered into force, the Protocol to the 1979 Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution to Abate Acidification, Eutrophication and Ground-level Ozone and the Protocol on Water and Health to the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes.

The Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution and its related protocols and the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes and its Protocol on Water and Health are two examples in this regard.
