The Assembly reaffirmed the central role of the Commission on the Status of Women in assisting the Economic and Social Council in monitoring, assessing progress made and accelerating the implementation of the Platform for Action and the outcome of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly within the United Nations system, and in advising the Council thereon.

In 1996 the Council again expanded the terms of reference of the Commission to include monitoring, reviewing and appraising progress achieved and problems encountered in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action at all levels and advising the Council thereon (see Council resolution 1996/6).

In addition to those terms of reference, the Council decided that the Commission should review the findings of research and analysis pertaining to the interrelationship between population and development at the national, regional and global levels and advise the Council thereon (resolution 1995/55, para. 3).

In its resolution 2004/60, the Council requested the Ad Hoc Advisory Group on Burundi to continue to follow closely the humanitarian situation and economic and social conditions, to examine the transition from relief to development in Burundi and the way in which the international community supported the process and to report to the Council thereon.
