As indicated above, the Convention is the sole multilateral environmental agreement to have an established voluntary fund for the Participation of Indigenous and Local Communities in its meetings.

34. The Conference of the Parties has recognized the importance of the Participation of Indigenous and Local Communities in the elaboration and negotiation of the international regime on access and benefit-sharing in the preamble of decision IX/12.

19. At its eighth meeting, held in Curitiba, Brazil, in March 2007, the Conference of the Parties became the first governing body of a multilateral environmental agreement to establish a voluntary funding mechanism specifically for the Participation of Indigenous and Local Communities in meetings held under the Convention.

In particular, the voluntary fund for the Participation of Indigenous and Local Communities in meetings held under the Convention is now fully operational, and information about the fund, including application forms, can be found on the Convention on Biological Diversity website.
