2. The Fifth Committee considered the note by the Secretary-General on reform of the procedure for determining reimbursement to Member States for contingent-owned equipment (A/55/650) at its 37th meeting, on 12 December 2000.

It regarded the report of the Secretary-General on reform of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management as a positive sign for the future of conference servicing and as the first phase in what it expected would be a process of continuing improvements.

At its fifty-first session,226 the General Assembly continued its consideration of the report of the Secretary-General on reform of the procedures for determining reimbursement to Member States for contingent-owned equipment (A/50/807) and the related reports of ACABQ (A/50/887 and A/51/646).

His delegation noted the improvement in the timely issuance of documents as a result of the introduction of the slotting system, as described in the report of the Secretary-General on reform of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (A/58/213), but hoped to see further improvement.

44. The problems with the delivery of summary records had persisted for too long. His delegation welcomed the options proposed in the report of the Secretary-General on reform of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (A/59/172). The relevant provisions of the draft resolution proposed by the Committee on Conferences could also provide a way forward.

In considering the electronic availability of documents, the report of the Secretary-General on reform of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management had concluded (A/58/213, para. 34) that technological advances such as the use of new technology in conference rooms would ultimately reduce the requirement for hard-copy documents.
