On 5 May, the Representative of the Secretary-General in Nepal and Head of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN), Karin Landgren, briefed the Council on the status of the peace process in Nepal and the work of UNMIN.

The present report is submitted pursuant to paragraph 4 of Security Council resolution 1180 (1998) of 29 June 1998, in which the Council, inter alia, requested me to submit a report by 7 August 1998 with recommendations regarding the United Nations involvement in Angola, taking into account the safety and freedom of movement of personnel of the United Nations Observer Mission in Angola (MONUA) and the status of the peace process.

The Seminar discussed the status of the peace process and the implementation of peace agreements. Final status negotiations and the economic situation in the region were also discussed.

By paragraph 26 of the same resolution, the Security Council requested me to report every 45 days to provide updates on the status of the peace process, on security conditions on the ground, and on the continued level of deployment of personnel of the Monitoring Group of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOMOG).

During the summit of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in Lusaka in July 2001, I had the opportunity to meet separately with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi of Ethiopia and President Isaias Afwerki of Eritrea to discuss the status of the peace process and the difficulties mentioned in the above paragraphs.
