Mexico believes that with this advisory opinion, the Court has contributed significantly to clarifying the scope of applicable norms of international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law, as well as the scope of the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and the Security Council.

As I mentioned earlier, this advisory opinion was given in response to the request made by the General Assembly in its resolution 63/3 of 8 October 2008, that the Court provide an opinion on the following question:

We therefore would like to appraise carefully the implications that this advisory opinion might have on the international community's legal views of the use of nuclear weapons.
