As her delegation interpreted it, the mandate thus conferred was for a technical and legal appraisal of the appropriateness of such a request in the light of the criteria set forth in General Assembly decision 49/426, namely, that observer status should be confined to States and to those intergovernmental organizations whose activities covered matters of interest to the Assembly.
