The present note contains the recommendations adopted by the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Populations in March 2003 concerning the allocation of travel grants to attend the second session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

At its fifteenth session in 2002, the Board of Trustees approved the revised Cost Plan of the Fund for 2003, in which it recommended to the Secretary-General to increase the amount of money for allocation to beneficiaries of travel grants to attend the second session of the Forum, taking into consideration the large number of applications that had been received to attend the first session of the Forum.

30. At its fifteenth session in 2002, the Board of Trustees recommended that a special session be held, from 24 to 26 February 2003, to approve applications for travel grants to attend the second session of the Permanent Forum which was scheduled to be held in May 2003.

31. As a result, the Board of Trustees followed the procedure that was approved in 2001 for intersessional consultations concerning the new mandate of the Fund as decided by the General Assembly resolution 56/140 in selecting beneficiaries of travel grants to attend the second session of the Permanent Forum.

Applications for travel grants to attend the 2011 sessions of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues must be submitted by the established deadline of 1 October 2010 to allow for analysis by the secretariat of the Fund and by the Board of Trustees.

The Board recommended 80 travel grants to attend the session of the Working Group on Indigenous Populations, for a total amount of approximately US$ 144,000, and 15 travel grants to attend the Working Group of the Commission on Human Rights, for a total amount of approximately $41,000 (see list of beneficiaries in document E/CN.4/Sub.2/AC.4/2003/12).
