The adopted Strategic Approach requests the Executive Director of UNEP to establish and assume overall responsibility for a secretariat to support implementation of the strategic approach. The secretariat would be co-located with the chemicals and waste cluster of UNEP in Geneva. UNEP and the World Health Organization would take lead roles in the secretariat in their respective areas of responsibility.

Pursuant to paragraph 29 of the Overarching Policy Strategy of the Strategic Approach, the International Conference on Chemicals Management, in its resolution I/1, requested the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to establish and assume overall administrative responsibility for the Strategic Approach secretariat and to co-locate it with the chemicals and wastes cluster of UNEP.
