In its resolution 63/261, the General Assembly also requested the Secretary-General to explore potential synergies and complementarities among special political missions (para. 11) and to identify means to achieve greater complementarities and synergies between the Department of Political Affairs and other departments and offices of the United Nations Secretariat as well as other relevant actors of the United Nations system (para. 25).

In line with the recommendations of the Advisory Committee (see A/62/7/Add.29, para. 9) on explaining the role of various departments and offices of the Secretariat, regional partners, peacekeeping operations and the funds, programmes and other entities of the United Nations system in providing support to special political missions, efforts have been made to include such information in the introductory part of each individual mission budget.
