It is no exaggeration to say that none of those assembled at that sixteenth special session of the General Assembly, devoted to the question of apartheid and its destructive consequences in Southern Africa, fully realized that they were on the threshold of momentous change in South Africa.
وليس من قبيل المبالغة القول بأن أولئك الذين اجتمعوا في الدورة الاستثنائية السادسة عشرة للجمعية العامــــة، المكرسة لمسألة الفصل العنصري وآثاره المدمرة فـــــي الجنـــوب الافريقي، ما كانوا يدركون تمام الادراك أنهـم علـــى عتبة تغيير تاريخي في جنوب افريقيا.

As the Secretary-General has just said, at its sixteenth special session, held in 1989, the Assembly set the framework for the peaceful transformation of South Africa into a united, democratic and non-racial society, adopting by consensus the historic Declaration on Apartheid and its Destructive Consequences in Southern Africa.

On 14 December 1989, the United Nations General Assembly took up the issue at its sixteenth special session and adopted the Declaration of Apartheid and its Destructive Consequences in Southern Africa.
في ١٤ كانون اﻷول/ديسمبر ١٩٨٩ تناولت الجمعية العامة لﻷمم المتحدة هذه المسألة في دورتها الاستثنائية السادسة عشرة واعتمدت الاعلان المتعلق بالفصل العنصري وآثاره المدمرة في الجنوب الافريقي.

Members will recall that it was through the commendable efforts of this Assembly that the aspirations and frustrations of all peace-loving South Africans were rightly and justifiably expressed in the December 1989 United Nations Declaration on Apartheid and its Destructive Consequences in Southern Africa, which was unanimously approved by the international community at the sixteenth special session of the General Assembly.

Since December 1989, the policies of the United Nations with regard to South Africa have been guided by the objectives of the Declaration on Apartheid and its Destructive Consequences in Southern Africa, approved by consensus at the sixteenth special session of the General Assembly on 14 December 1989 (resolution S-16/1).
