The Convention Secretariat draws attention to the fact that the Convention is the first legally binding international agreement to provide for the equitable sharing of the benefits arising from the utilization of the knowledge, innovations and practices of indigenous and local communities embodying traditional lifestyles.

65. The lack of implementation by the international community concerning the transfer of environmentally sound technology and the equitable sharing of benefits from technology, especially information, communication and other new technologies, was noted by many countries.
65 - وأشارت بلدان كثيرة إلى تقاعس المجتمع الدولي عن نقل التكنولوجيا السليمة بيئيا وعن التقاسم المنصف للفوائد المتأتية من التكنولوجيا، ولا سيما تكنولوجيا المعلومات والاتصال وسائر التكنولوجيات الجديدة.

The Convention also enshrines the importance of customary practice in biodiversity conservation and calls for its protection and for the equitable sharing of benefits from the use and application of traditional technologies (articles 10 (c) and 18, paragraph 4).
