Eritrea stated its readiness to respond immediately and favourably to the two-point appeal of the current Chairman of OAU, namely, the immediate cessation of the fighting and the resumption of proximity talks.

At the very moment that the negotiations under the auspices of ECOWAS are about to begin, the Acting Chairman of OAU invites all the parties to make every effort to bring their endeavours to a satisfactory conclusion.
وفي الوقت الذي ستبدأ فيه المفاوضات برعاية الجماعة الاقتصادية لدول غرب أفريقيا، يدعو الرئيس الحالي لمنظمة الوحدة اﻷفريقية جميع اﻷطراف إلى بذل ما في وسعها من جهد من أجل أن تتكلل أعمالها بالنجاح.

The Council then heard statements by the representatives of Algeria (on behalf of the current Chairman of OAU) and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

6. The latest peace effort scuttled by Eritrea is the proximity talks that took place in Algiers from 29 April to 5 May 2000 under the auspices of the current Chairman of OAU, with the support of senior officials of the United States of America and representatives of the European Union.
6 - وآخر جهود السلام التي أحبطتها إريتريا هي محادثات الجوار التي جرت في الجزائر في الفترة من 29 نيسان/أبريل إلى 5 أيار/مايو 2000 تحت إشراف الرئيس الحالي لمنظمة الوحدة الأفريقية بدعم من مسؤولين كبار من الولايات المتحدة وممثلين للاتحاد الأوروبي.

I am now pleased to report that those talks have culminated in the signing, on 18 June 2000, of the Agreement on Cessation of Hostilities between Ethiopia and Eritrea by the Foreign Ministers of both countries, under the auspices of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria, in his capacity as the current Chairman of OAU.

رسالتان متطابقتان مؤرختان 24 آذار/مارس (S/2000/254) موجهتان إلى الأمين العام ورئيس مجلس الأمن من ممثل الجزائر يحيل بهما بلاغا صادرا عن الرئيس الحالي لمنظمة الوحدة الأفريقية بشأن استئناف أعمال القتال في جمهورية الكونغو الديمقراطية.

(g) Seventhly, on behalf of the current Chairman of OAU, the Personal Envoy invites the two Parties to send their delegations to Algiers for the resumption of the proximity talks, immediately after the publication of the statements of each Party as stated in paragraphs (b) and (c) above.

Africa, as was mentioned on 12 September 2000 by the current Chairman of the OAU, must face all kinds of difficulties, but it remains a region that is potentially wealthy and as a result must be assisted and supported in order to fulfil its immense potential.

- وإذ يذكِّر كذلك بالبيان الصادر عن الرئيس الحالي لمنظمة الوحدة الأفريقية في 12 أيار/مايو 2000 عقب استئناف الأعمال الحربية بين إثيوبيا وإريتريا، فضلا عن البيان الصادر عن الأمين العام لمنظمة الوحدة الأفريقية في 13 أيار/مايو 2000؛

7. Endorses also the 5 May 2000 Communiqué issued by the current Chairman of the OAU, which records the achievements of the OAU-led negotiations up to that point, including the areas of convergence already established between the two parties;
7 - يؤيد أيضا البلاغ الذي أصدره الرئيس الحالي لمنظمة الوحدة الأفريقية في 5 أيار/مايو 2000 (S/2000/394)، الذي يسجل الإنجازات المتحققة في المفاوضات التي تزعمت منظمة الوحدة الأفريقية إجراءها حتى الآن، ومن بينها نقاط التلاقي التي تم التوصل إليها بين الطرفين؛

the Acting Chairman of OAU welcomes this outcome and expresses his support for the signing of this agreement, which constitutes an important milestone in the peace process in Sierra Leone.
ويرحب الرئيس الحالي لمنظمة الوحدة اﻷفريقية بهذه النتيجة ويؤيد التوقيع على هذا الاتفاق الذي يشكل مرحلة هامة في عملية السلام في سيراليون.

6. In order to overcome that difficulty, the Secretary-General held extensive consultations with the current Chairman and the Secretary-General of OAU and with other concerned parties with a view to enabling the Commission to start the identification and registration of potential voters, which was subsequently planned on 8 August 1994.
٦ - وبغية التغلب على تلك الصعوبات، أجرى اﻷمين العام مشاورات مكثفة مع الرئيس الحالي لمنظمة الوحدة اﻷفريقية وأمينها العام ومع اﻷطراف المعنية اﻷخرى بهدف تمكين اللجنة من الشروع في عملية تحديد هوية الناخبين المحتملين وتسجيلهم والتي من المعتزم أن تبدأ فيما بعد في ٨ آب/أغسطس ١٩٩٤.
