As you are aware, the Secretary-General has asked me to serve as the Interim Head of the Department of Public Information, following the departure of my distinguished predecessor, Under-Secretary-General Kensaku Hogen.

One of the first objectives of the joint task force established by the Interim Head of the Department and the Administrator of UNDP in 2001 was to review and, if appropriate, update that understanding.

56. At the end of the general debate, the Interim Head of the Department of Public Information made a statement, in which he responded to some of the questions raised by delegations.

Mr. Tharoor, you have taken an active part in that reorientation; you were formerly Director of Communications and Special Projects in the Executive Office of the Secretary-General, projecting the image of an Organization committed to change; now once again, as the Interim Head of the Department, it is your role to capitalize on the efforts which were initiated previously and to project them at the level of the United Nations as a whole.
