We urge the international community to take action to compel Israel, the occupying Power, to cease these deplorable practices and to heed the calls for the release of Palestinian prisoners and detainees and for respect for their human rights.

In this regard, we welcome the statement of the Secretary-General of the United Nations expressing concern over the deteriorating health of the Palestinian prisoners and detainees who have been on hunger strike and his call upon Israel to comply with its international human rights obligations in this regard.
