Work undertaken by various special rapporteurs, including the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences, highlighted the severe impact on women arising from inadequate housing and living conditions, and in situations where their housing rights have been violated or not respected.

The Special Rapporteur contributed an article to this report in which he discussed inadequate and insecure housing and living conditions such as overcrowding, indoor pollution, precarious housing, lack of water, sanitation and electricity and inadequate building materials, realities affecting women to a larger extent than men.

42. In her report on the mission to Maldives (A/HRC/13/20/Add.3), the Special Rapporteur expressed concern about the dire housing and living conditions of migrants who came to the country to work on construction sites, in resorts and in the domestic sector.

Measures adopted by States to relax restrictions and controls over the types of accommodations employers may provide to migrant workers, such as granting permission to convert sections of industrial premises into dormitories or to house migrants in metal containers without facilities or services, also have a detrimental impact on the housing and living conditions of migrants.
72 - كما أن للتدابير التي تعتمدها الدول لتخفيف القيود والضوابط على أنواع المساكن التي يجوز أن يوفرها المشغلون للمهاجرين، من قبيل السماح بتحويل أجزاء من المباني الصناعية إلى مهاجع أو بإسكان المهاجرين في حاويات معدنية دونما مرافق أو خدمات، أثر ضار على الظروف السكنية والمعيشية للمهاجرين.

The widespread destruction of homes and the resulting displacement can result in the establishment of centralized camps which facilitate provision of assistance, but where poor housing and living conditions can pose particularly severe health risks for women and children (in some of the affected countries, they
