It was not until 1990 that Nicaragua began a new journey in the patriotic march towards liberty and democracy by electing President Doña Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, who during the precarious transitional period, laid on uncertain terrain the first stones of national harmony and reconstruction, the first stones of an edifice not yet finished, with much remaining to be done.

In 1990 President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro's Government initiated the country's integral transition from authoritarianism to participatory democracy, from a centralized economy to a market economy, from poverty to development, from confrontation to social rapprochement, and from war to peace.

That patriotic and prudent Government to which I am referring is the creation of its President, Mrs. Violeta Barrios de Chamorro, who has, since assuming office in April 1990, set the goal of totally pacifying her country, of consolidating an economic system based on the free market and thereby establish an equitable economic system, and of laying the foundation for a deepening and strengthening of the democratic process.

Mr. CASTELLON DUARTE (Nicaragua), speaking under agenda item 172, said that the accession of Mrs. Violeta Barrios de Chamorro to the presidency of the Republic of Nicaragua, and the holding of the World Summit for Children in 1990 were two events that had cast a ray of hope on the future of more than 600,000 Nicaraguan children and adolescents who had been living in especially difficult circumstances since the events of the 1980s.
