In its resolution 55/69 on the improvement of the status of women in the United Nations system, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to continue to monitor closely the progress made by departments and offices in meeting the goal of gender balance; and to intensify his efforts to create a gender-sensitive work environment supportive of the needs of his staff.

Turning to the report on improvement of the situation of women in rural areas (A/68/179), he noted that the varying circumstances of rural women led to varied rural migration scenarios, including recourse to unregulated recruitment agencies or smugglers.
