At its sixth session in Khartoum (23 and 24 January 2006), the Assembly of the African Union adopted a decision on the Second Decade of Education for Africa (2006-2015) and the framework for the plan of action of the decade.

The New York-based Subcommittee for the Eradication of Poverty of the NGO Committee for Social Development of the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Status with the United Nations (CONGO) organized a number of consultations on the Second Decade during the 2008 sessions of the Commission for Social Development, the Commission on Sustainable Development and the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
